During Simulation each student and faculty member will have a role. The roles will vary depending on the scenario. The expectation is that the student will be able to adapt to the role they are given. Remember that this is a safe learning environment that gives students and opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained while practicing time management and enhancing their critical thinking.
- Nurse: This gives the students the opportunity to practice as a Registered Nurse. The student is responsible for making decisions and providing interventions to their patient.
- Licensed Practical Nurse: This gives the students an opportunity to practice the skills learned in Blocks 1 & 2. This also gives students an opportunity to assist their peers and act as either primary caregiver to the patient or assist the RN.
- Tech: This gives the students the opportunity to assist their peers by providing the opportunity to delegate and communicate the needs of the patient.
- Family or Visitor: It is important for students to practice professional communication with their patients family member or visitor. This gives the students the opportunity to assess their peers and provide valuable feedback on how they felt as the family member or visitor.
- Charge Nurse: The role of a charge nurse gives the student an opportunity to participate in a professional role that helps to support the nurse and provide guidance for safe patient care.
- Patient: Although the use of high fidelity manikins in simulation helps provide a safe learning environment. At times students will be asked to participate by being the patient.
- Doctor: This role is generally reserved for the faculty, but students can be asked to participate in the role of the doctor as well.
- Observer: This is the role that all students will have an opportunity to participate in. It is very important to observe your peers and learn from them. This role is also important in providing feedback to your peers. Your overall view allows you to critically analyze the situation, while not under pressure, and formulate new interventions that can help your fellow students during debriefing.
